Goa is a tiny emerald land on the West coast of India that was liberated from Portuguese rule in 1961. Its long history as a Portuguese colony prior to 1961 is evident in its preserved 17th-century churches and the area’s tropical spice plantations.
It was a part of the Union Territory of Goa, Daman & Diu till 30th May 1987, when it was carved out to form a separate state.
Goa is flanked by the Arabian Sea on the West and Sahyadri Mountains on the East; the Trekhol River separates it from Maharastra in the North, while to the South it borders the state of Karnataka.
