TOPIC: Getting to know the Indian Hedgehog and its role in the mandibular condylar growth(40 minutes lecture)
Abstract
In neuromuscular treatment, when getting the muscular genetic length after relaxation with TENS, in most of the cases, the mandible moves downwards and forward. In this mandibular posture change, where afferences and efferences connected with the central nervous system are reorganized, first there is muscular internal change and then bone change, based on the type of ossification in the mandible, where during its growth there are hormonal genetic factors as well as mechanical ones. This conference is based on scientific studies related to the Indian Hedgehog protein (IHH), which acts as a transducer and turns the mechanical tension (muscular) into cell proliferation and tissue formation in the mandibular condylar cartilage. IHH is our ally as, by using neuromuscular intraoral appliances, there is a mandibular advancement, and the external Pterygoid muscle acts originating IHH action, resulting in chondrocytes replication and therefore, condylar growth.
